Noise Loggers are used for detection in the beginning stages of leaks in our water supply. If a leak is not caught early we risk a greater loss of precious water resources. Noise loggers are more sensitive to the dripping sound of leaks at night, when background noise is at a minimum. Sounds generated by a leak tend to have a reasonably consistent vibration and that is how our field technicians can identify a leak and repair it.
In the average distribution system, as much as 30 percent of treated water is lost due to a simple fixable leak, but the problems are often located underground, and can be hard to pinpoint. But by using Noise Logger devices spotting underground leaks is at 99.5 percent.
It’s easy to take having a good supply of clean water for granted, but it’s actually a huge global issue, and one that’s getting much worse, with as much as a third of the world’s population expected to experience scarcity issues by 2025. A recent MIT study also looked at the issue, using various computer simulations to determine that a significant percentage of the population of Asia could suffer from water shortage by 2050. So with that said, it is important to find these links that will put our water supply in danger. If you suspect a leak, it’s important to know exactly where the problem is, and fix it before it causes unnecessary disruption.
The units are magnetically attached to water valves inside manholes and valve boxes, and are battery-powered, measuring 12.3 cm (4.8 in) tall and 5 cm (2 in) wide, and weigh 700 g (1.5 lb) each. If a noise that’s picked up by a logger during its recording period is found to be consistent, then it’s likely due to a leak. With this data in hand, ACS can pinpoint the exact location of individual leak and repair it saving time and money.
