Utility location or utility markout, is the process of identifying and labeling public or private utility mains which are underground. These mains may include lines for telephones, electricity distribution, natural gas, cable television, fiber optics, traffic lights, street lights, storm drains, water mains, and wastewater pipes. In some locations, major oil and gas pipelines, national defense communication lines, mass transit, rail and road tunnels also compete for space underground.
Because of the many different types of materials that go into manufacturing each of these different types of underground lines, different detection and location methods must be used. For metal pipes and cables, this is often done with electro-magnetic equipment consisting of a transmitter and a receiver. For other types of pipe, such as plastic or concrete, other types of radiolocation or modern ground penetrating radar (GPR) must be used.
Location by these means is necessary because maps often lack the pinpoint precision needed to ensure proper clearance. In older cities, it is especially a problem since maps may be very inaccurate, or may be missing entirely. ACS Underground Solutions provides a service that allows construction workers to denote where underground utilities are located via color-coding those locations. As required by law and assigned by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). ACS experienced professionals use on-ground surface state-of-the-art technologies to locate utilities. Together with extensive knowledge of underground systems we can provide assurance and confidence to any site.
Environmental Test Bore Clearings
ACS Underground Solutions can clear proposed test bores/environmental test bores on proposed sites. Test bore clearing is performed in the same manner as a utility mark out by attaching to the known utilities and sweeping the areas in a passive mode and using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR ) which allows the contractor to drill, excavate and perform their samples for the site.
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a non-intrusive testing method used for a variety of locating purposes. GPR may be used for a broad range of engineering, environmental and construction applications. GPR is commonly used to detect and delineate buried waste materials (bulk and drummed); to locate buried utilities (metallic and non-metallic); roadway and airport pavement thickness evaluations; to locate buried structural components; to locate voids in/or below concrete especially unknown or abandoned utilities, stress cables in large multi story office building and parking structures are one of the most popular application used for GPR.
ACS Underground Solutions specializes in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for locating non-detectable objects underground that traditional locating methods have difficulty finding. All results are studied and verified on site and back at ACS corporate office’s in CT. |
