Jets Giants New Stadium

Skanska USA, is one of the world’s leading construction groups with expertise in construction, development of commercial and residential projects. www.skanskausa.com “Skanska USA was awarded the design-build contract of the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey which involves the construction of a technologically advanced open-air sports and entertainment venue. The structure will have a spectator seating capacity of 82,000, including 217 luxury suite boxes. The new stadium will be the home field for the New York Giants and the New York Jets, the first facility built specifically to accommodate two National Football League teams.”

ACS Underground Solutions had prior knowledge of this site from successfully locating and marking out utilities in and around the older stadium in 2004-2005 for Skanksa USA. Our experience and expertise kept ACS on the top of the contract list at Skanska USA for the new stadium. They awarded ACS Underground Solutions the contract and work began in 2007-2009. Our job was to survey and locate the fiber optic communication, sewer, water, gas and electrical lines for the new construction.

The project entailed over 5000 piles that needed to be driven into the ground for the new construction of the stadium. With 5000 piles being driven, ACS had a huge work load and had several technicians on this site. Existing utilities were still operating in the old stadium and it was imperative they be protected at
all cost.

There were many challenges using the factory preset frequency’s that are used in locating instruments. Our utility locating technicians had to come up with several different frequencies to complete this project. ACS selected very low frequency’s to avoid “bleeding off” onto opposing utilities. Jets Giants New Stadium was loaded with utilities and different frequencies that made finding any utility a challenge but the system Mr. Ian Beaver (President of ACS Underground Solutions) recommended worked perfectly.

Once a perfected system was in place, piles were approved and driven for the stadium. ACS cleared approximately 6-8 piles a day. ACS also used GPR - Ground Penetrating Radar on site to verify any lines at depths of 15 ft or more using 500 khz in wet clay. This was an incredible challenge, so we switched to 250khz to improve the site conditions and clearance.
