The Jacob K. Javits Center is New York City’s largest international trade show gateway development, located in midtown Manhattan along the Hudson River. www.javitscenter.com.
In 2007, The Javits Center was undergoing a new design. ACS Underground Solutions was included in the very first phase of planning for this new renovation. ACS was contracted to locate all of the underground utilities that service The Javits Center. Specific attention to detail was required at The Javits Center during the remodeling of the building. All existing utilities that feed the building had to be kept in full service during the demo and remodeling.
There was a number of 13k electrical feeders coming off 12th Avenue that were 18ft deep. These were difficult to locate due to the depth of the cables. ACS used a 1000 kHz GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) antenna on this site to verify such lines. The building had fiber optic cables that were also 15-18 ft deep. The combination of equipment, skill, experience and knowledge was used by the ACS team of technicians to successfully identify and locate these important communication cables.
After ACS finished locating utilities on the exterior of the building we continued to mark out the utilities in the interior of the building. 54 test bore sites had to be drilled to support the weight of the new addition. Once more, the ACS expertise on tools such as GPR helped this site have no utility disruptions during the mass demolition. Other existing utilities had to be located so that new lines were tapped or spliced from them.
“Without ACS Underground Solutions on this difficult site we would not of known where to begin, we had two other so called utility companies attempt to protect this site but they failed when two lines were hit. We welcomed ACS with open arms”.
